Locked Out of Your Car? Do These 5 Things Before Calling a Locksmith

Do-These-5-Things-Before-Calling-a-LocksmithGetting locked out of your car is many things: inconvenient, frustrating, and even embarrassing, but it is not the end of the world. In this scenario, calling an auto locksmith is the best solution. Professional locksmiths have the experience and the tools to get you into your vehicle quickly. However, it takes some time for the locksmith to arrive at your location. So, before you call a locksmith, there are some things you should do that may help you gain access to your vehicle.

Following are 5 things you should do before calling an automotive locksmith:

1. Stay Calm
Often when locked out of the vehicle, people start to panic and it makes sense because getting locked out of a car is frustrating and can cloud your judgement at first. In this scenario, it is recommended that you stay calm. There might be a way to get back in. Start by double checking that you really are locked out. It is not uncommon for locksmiths to arrive only to find out that the vehicle is in fact not locked. So, do a lap of your vehicle and make sure there are no open doors or windows that you can take advantage of.

2. Search for a Spare
Once you have confirmed that you really are locked out of your vehicle, the next step is to look for a spare key. Many people tend to keep a spare in their wallet, pocket, etc. So, checking them is a good idea. If you have any loved ones that may be holding on to a spare key for emergencies, don’t hesitate to call them. While it may be a hassle to bother another person for your car keys, this is the most cost-effective and efficient way to regain access to your car.

3. Try Remote Functions
Many modern cars allow you to unlock the door as well as start the car if the remote key fob is placed nearby. So, check whether the remote key fob is in the car and it is close enough to allow you to disengage the lock.

4. Don’t Try DIY Methods to Regain Access
When you are locked out of your vehicle, you may be tempted to find a clever way back inside it. For instance, some may try using a wire hanger in order to access the unlocking button. However, while this solution may result in unlocking the door, it can damage it which is very expensive to fix. In other cases, you may be tempted to break the window. Keep in mind that the glass is not designed to break easily, even with brute force. Trying to break it will only result in it chipping or cracking – problems that can be very costly to repair.

5. Get Somewhere Safe
If you have exhausted all of your options, then it is time to call an auto locksmith. Before you pull out your phone and call a locksmith, it is recommended that you make sure that you are aware of your surroundings. Go somewhere else if you don’t feel safe in the area where you are parked.
